September 23rd, 2017 is when OSHA began enforcing the silica standard for the construction industry. Ever since that time, I’ve looked at the best methods and tools for being Table 1 compliant.
I often take on projects where I’m drilling in concrete, so it’s important that I keep myself safe from breathing in the silica dust. The minimum safety measure is wearing an N95 mask if your drill doesn’t have any type of HEPA vacuum attachment.
A few months ago I was made aware of this plumbing problem that was hidden above the dropped ceiling. The plumbers installed this 1″ copper line about 25 year ago and used inadequate fasteners, resulting in the copper line to fall down and lay on the top of the ceiling.
I think I found the perfect OSHA approved tool setup for drilling in concrete. This Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1 in. Rotary Hammer Drill also has the HEPA vacuum attachment called the Hammervac on board. This in an all-in-1 unit that vacuums the dust as it drills. There’s no need to bring another vacuum or wear a mask.
The Hammervac has a dust shroud and a HEPA vacuum that runs off the batter in the hammer drill. This portable cordless design really works well. I highly recommend it!
I was able to drill several 1/2″ holes for the drop-in anchors, resulting in a proper way to secure the copper line.
The 1″ copper line is properly secured now with a heavy duty anchor, a threaded rod, and a copper split-ring hanger. I ended up putting 4 anchors in for spanning approximately 40′. If you want to find out more about the tools and materials I used, check the links below.
