One of the challenges I’ve had over the years is how to keep your outdoor furniture looking nice and be easy to dry and use. Untreated wood, when it gets wet, never seems to really dry off. I discovered what worked (and what doesn’t) to completely change the usability of my outdoor furniture.

Here’s a bench that I’m going to refurbish. The furniture was built by someone else, but I’m working on making it more useful.

First I used this Milwaukee M18 fuel belt sander to take the top layer off.

Then I used a Milwaukee Quarter sheet sander to get the layers of mildew off.

Then I used Marine Wood finish- its an easy to apply varnish alternative. It has a breathable, flexible gloss finish. I used Starbond  glue to fill in some cracks in the wood. And here’s my test of the finished result:

The water was easy to dry off so I could sit on it right away, and I think this finish will last a long time.
